Cultivating Inner Warmth
When our inner fire is awake, warmth spreads through the body from the inside out. This inner warmth supports circulation, digestive flow, and immunity, sustaining the deeper structures of our being throughout winter.
Winter is a time where nature slows down, and so does our rhythm. This is good. It is an important time for the body to enter deeper states of rest, restoration, and rejuvenation. It is a time for the inner soil of our being to restore and regenerate.
Winter naturally allows this process to happen.
At the same time though, it is important to support the functions and processes of the body, brain, and mind. Cultivating internal warmth is a fundamental part of that support. This article provides a gentle guide.
The Inner Climate and the Outer Climate
We have an outer climate and we have an inner climate.
Our outer climate is the easier one to notice; it touches our skin, nose, eyes, ears, and tongue first. Our inner climate is more subtle. We don’t immediately sense it. But that doesn’t mean it is less important. In fact, our inner climate is the more important of the two.
Like a tree, the quality of leaves and fruits are directly affected by the health of the roots and the soil they are planted in. Our outer physical body is a natural consequence of the state of our inner climate.
Scarves, gloves, and warm jumpers are important for cultivating warmth in our outer climate. But more important is cultivating warmth on the inside and keeping the inner fire alive.
In Ayurveda, this inner fire is known as Agni, and sits at the core of our well-being.
Maintaining the inner state of the body in healthy flow is fundamental. Because in winter, flow is naturally slower.
Digestion & Internal Warmth
The Key Role of Digestion
In winter, the body needs and uses an extra amount of its energy resources to maintain warmth. But one of the body’s natural processes is energy-intensive already.
Digestion.
When there is food in our body, digesting that food becomes a priority, and the body is forced to assign energy resources to the digestive process until it is complete. When digestion requires excess effort, energy is diverted away from maintaining warmth. This creates an energy shortage.
Supporting digestion conserves energy and allows the system to direct resources toward sustaining internal warmth. And during winter, this is important.
Three Words to Live By in Winter
- Warm
- Soft
- Moist
Foods that are warm, soft, and moist are gentle on the digestive system, move through the digestive tract with ease, and require less of the body’s energy resources. This frees up energy for the body to maintain warmth.
Keeping the Digestive Fire Alive
Digestive fire (agni) is central.
When digestion is supported, warmth spreads naturally through the body, circulation is supported, and immunity is steadily strengthened and built. Supporting digestion in winter is about gentle, non-aggressive, integrated lifestyle practices, rather than extremes.
Practical Takeaways
Morning Support
- Sip ginger tea to awaken your digestive fire (1 tsp grated fresh ginger + 1 cup water, bring to boil then gently simmer 5 mins)
